What is the iHEAR TReO?
The iHEAR TReO is a Personal Sound Amplification Product (PSAP) designed for non-hearing-impaired adults who want to enhance environmental sounds across different situational and recreational settings. It is Made in the USA and available as a single unit ($99) or a pair ($149).
The TReO is engineered for simplicity and comfort. It refines and amplifies environmental sounds for the moments that matter most: theater performances, lectures, seminars, museums, birdwatching, hunting, and outdoor adventures.
Who is the iHEAR TReO designed for?
The TReO is designed for non-hearing-impaired adults 18 and older who want a high-fidelity audio edge for situational and recreational activities, such as theater, lectures, live performances, museums, birdwatching, or hunting.
If you suspect you have hearing loss, even mild to moderate, TReO is not the right product for you. The iHEAR Matrix OTC hearing aid would be a better fit.
What is the difference between a PSAP and an OTC hearing aid?
PSAPs (Personal Sound Amplification Products) are consumer electronic devices designed to amplify environmental sounds for people who want to hear better in everyday situations without a clinical diagnosis. The iHEAR TReO is a PSAP.
OTC Hearing Aids are FDA-regulated medical devices specifically intended for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss that has been diagnosed or self-assessed. Our HearingAssist Stream, Ease, and Control models are OTC (over-the-counter) hearing aids.
If you are unsure which product is right for you, contact us at Care@OTCHealthMart.com and we'll be happy to help you decide.
What batteries does the iHEAR TReO use?
The iHEAR TReO uses Size 312 zinc-air batteries, which are included with every purchase. Size 312 batteries are widely available at pharmacies, grocery stores, and online retailers.
How long do TReO batteries last?
With typical daily use, each Size 312 zinc-air battery lasts approximately 5-7 days. Battery life can vary depending on usage duration, volume settings, and environmental factors.
Tip: When not in use, opening the battery door (or storing the battery with its protective tab in place) will help extend battery life.
Is the iHEAR TReO covered by HSA or FSA?
HSA and FSA eligibility for PSAPs can vary by plan administrator. We recommend checking directly with your HSA or FSA plan provider to confirm whether the iHEAR TReO qualifies under your specific plan.
We can provide an itemized receipt upon request to assist with any reimbursement claims.

How do I set up my HearingAssist STREAM?
The STREAM comes with a charging case, USB cable, three packages of dome tips, and a cleaning brush.
- Charge: Remove the plastic protective tab from each hearing aid, place them in the case, and plug in the USB cable. Blue lights = charging, white lights = fully charged. The case holds 3 full charges.

How do I set up my HearingAssist CONNECT?
The CONNECT works right out of the box - no app required (though one is available for extra customization).

- Wear: Remove from the case, check left/right markings, and place over each ear.

How do I set up my iHEAR Linx?
The Linx is an earbud-style hearing aid that also streams music and phone calls.
- Remove the protective tab from the bottom of each hearing aid and charge fully.
- Wear: Remove from the case, check left/right markings, and insert each earbud. Twist gently for a secure fit.
- Stream audio: Go to your phone's Bluetooth settings and connect to "iHEAR Linx" (without L or R) for music and phone calls.
- Download the app: Search for "My iHEAR" for hearing aid settings (separate from the streaming connection).
How do I connect my hearing aids to the phone app?
Before you start: Turn on Bluetooth, disconnect other Bluetooth headphones/speakers, and update your phone.
Which app do I need?
- HearingAssist devices (STREAM, CONNECT, CONTROL): Download "HearingAssist Stream" (red icon)
- iHEAR devices (Matrix, Axis, Linx): Download "My iHEAR"
Steps:
- Open the app on your phone.
- Take your hearing aids out of the charging case (they'll start flashing blue and white).
- Put them on your ears - the app will detect and connect within a few seconds.
Trouble connecting? Power cycle the hearing aids (put them back in the case for 10 seconds), toggle Bluetooth off/on, or restart your phone.

What are the four listening programs and when should I use them?
- Conversation / Standard: Your everyday mode - picks up sound from all directions. Use this most of the time.
- Restaurant: Focuses microphones forward and reduces background noise. Use in noisy environments like restaurants.
- Outdoors: Reduces wind noise across the microphones. Use outside on windy days.
- Music: Full, uncompressed audio - turns off speech prioritization so you hear music naturally.
Tip: Pick the best program first, then adjust volume. Don't change both at the same time.
How do I adjust the volume in the app?
- On the device: Press the buttons on the hearing aid (about 10 steps available)
- Through the app: Use the volume slider - you can adjust each ear independently or together
Tip: Start with a lower volume and gradually increase over the first few days as your brain adjusts.
Should I change the frequency bands in the app?
We recommend leaving the frequency bands at their default settings (zeros) unless a hearing professional guides you. The zeros don't mean zero amplification - they represent the factory-calibrated default levels.
If you do make changes: less is more, change both ears, press Save, and try the new settings for a while before adjusting further.
What do the Focus, Noise, and Loud Sound settings do?
Focus / Directionality: Controls where the microphones point. Normal mode picks up sound from all directions. TV mode focuses forward.
Noise Reduction: Suppresses background noise. Start with Off or Mild - setting it too high can make voices sound choppy.
Loud Sound Protection: Caps loud sounds so they don't become painful. Most people do fine with No or Low reduction.
How do I stream music or phone calls through my hearing aids?
Devices that support streaming (STREAM, Matrix, Linx) use two separate Bluetooth connections:
- App connection (shows as "[Device] Left" and "[Device] Right"): Controls hearing aid settings
- Streaming connection (shows as just "[Device]" without L/R): Streams music and phone calls
To set up streaming: Go to your phone's Bluetooth settings (not the hearing aid app), find your device name without a left/right designation, and tap to connect.
How long does it take to adjust to hearing aids?
Unlike eyeglasses, hearing aids take time. Your brain needs approximately 300 to 600 hours of wearing to fully adjust. Some people adapt in a few days; others may take a few weeks. This is completely normal.
What to expect at first:
- Everyday sounds (running water, paper crinkling, dishes) may seem unusually loud
- Your own voice may sound different, like you're "in a barrel" - this goes away within days
- Some mild ear itching or tickling is normal as your ears adjust
What can I do to adjust faster?
Practice at home: Walk around and identify sounds - "That's the refrigerator, that's the clock." Once your brain recognizes them, it will file them into the background.
Read out loud: Spend 15-20 minutes daily reading a book aloud. Seeing the words while hearing them helps your brain remap sounds faster.
Start at a lower volume: Don't crank it up right away. Gradually increase over time.
Wear them all day: From morning to night. Occasional use doesn't give your brain enough exposure to adapt.
Why should I wear my hearing aids every day?
"Use it or lose it" applies to hearing. If your brain isn't consistently fed the frequencies around you - especially high frequencies - it can eventually forget how to process them.
Wearing hearing aids daily protects the hearing you still have and keeps your auditory pathways active.
How do I make phone calls with hearing aids?
- Streaming devices (STREAM, Matrix, Linx): Phone calls stream directly through your hearing aids - the best experience
- Non-streaming devices: Move the phone slightly away from your ear and position the speaker near the top of your ear where the hearing aid's microphone sits
- Speakerphone: Always a good option if positioning is tricky
How can family and friends help during the adjustment period?
Even with hearing aids, your loved one is relearning how to process sounds. Here's how to help:
- Face them when speaking - visual cues from lip movement help enormously
- Don't yell - speak clearly at a normal pace instead
- Reduce background noise - turn down the TV when having a conversation
- Get their attention first - say their name before speaking
- Rephrase instead of repeating - try different words rather than saying the same thing louder
- Celebrate progress - acknowledge improvements instead of focusing on what they still miss
How do I choose the right dome tips?
- Open domes: Lightest feel, most natural sound, your voice sounds normal. Best starting point.
- Semi-open domes: Small slits for some airflow. Good if you get whistling with open domes.
- Closed domes: Smooth, no openings. Best at preventing feedback. Your voice may sound different at first.
Start with open domes. If whistling occurs at your preferred volume, try semi-open, then closed. Replace dome tips about once a month.
What's the best daily cleaning routine?
Every morning before putting your hearing aids in (2 minutes):
- Brush the dome tips: Hold the hearing aid with the dome pointing down. Use the included brush (or a soft-bristle toothbrush) to brush off dried wax. Gravity helps dislodge debris.
- Brush the microphone holes: The small holes on top of the hearing aid can get clogged with hairspray, gel, or dust.
- Wipe the body: Use a dry, soft cloth.
Why mornings? Overnight, any wax dries and becomes flaky - much easier to brush away.
Weekly: Remove the dome tip, clean the receiver opening with the wire loop end of the brush, and clean charging contacts with a dry Q-tip.
My hearing aids aren't as loud as they used to be
Wax buildup is the #1 cause. Do the "in-the-hand test":
- Take the hearing aid out of the case and let it turn on.
- Cup it in your hand.
- You should hear a loud squealing sound - this confirms the device is working.
If you hear the squeal, the issue is wax blocking the dome or receiver. Clean the dome tip or replace it with a fresh one.
My hearing device is whistling - what should I do?
Whistling when handling or inserting your hearing aids is normal and a good sign - it means the device is working. They should NOT whistle while sitting comfortably on your ears.
If whistling happens while wearing them:
- Lower the volume - it may be too high for the current dome type
- Try a different dome type - switch from open to semi-open or closed domes
- Reinsert - remove and reinsert to get a better seal
- Clean the device - wax can cause feedback too
My hearing aids aren't charging - what do I do?
Clean the contacts: Use a dry Q-tip to clean the round gold contact points on the bottom of each hearing aid and inside the charging case.
Reseat the hearing aids: Place the dome end in first, then position the body. Gently adjust until the charging light turns on.
Check the case battery: The four center lights show the case charge level. If no lights, plug the case into the wall.
Don't swap sides: Always place left in the left slot and right in the right slot.
Orange/amber light? That's the UV sanitizing LED - completely normal.
I'm not getting a full day of battery life
Try these steps in order:
- Update your app - updates often improve battery performance
- Verify proper charging - make sure lights come on when docked. Clean contacts if needed.
- Check your settings - higher volume and streaming use more battery. Consider lowering volume slightly or using the portable case for a midday top-up.
The charging case holds enough power for 3 full charges, so carry it with you for on-the-go recharging.
My hearing aids won't connect to the app or Bluetooth
Try these steps in order:
- Disconnect other Bluetooth devices - other headphones and speakers can interfere
- Power cycle: Put hearing aids back in the case, wait 10 seconds, then take them out
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on in your phone settings
- Restart your phone - a full reboot often resolves pairing issues
- Update the app - older versions may have connectivity bugs
Note: Streaming devices have two Bluetooth connections: the "app connection" (shows L and R separately) and the "streaming connection" (single entry without L/R). Both should be active.
How do I protect my hearing aids?
- Don't store in the bathroom - humidity and water splash damage electronics
- Apply hairspray and gel first - put hearing aids on after, so sprays don't clog the microphones
- Keep away from pets - dogs and cats love the smell of their owner on hearing aids and will chew them up. Always store in a closed case on a dresser or shelf
- Replace dome tips monthly - even with daily cleaning, built-in filters eventually clog
- Take care of your ears - keep ear canals clean. See a doctor if you experience active drainage, pain, redness, swelling, dizziness, or sudden hearing loss
